George Clinton revolutionized R&B in the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk and coloring it from the same sonic palette used by Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, & Sly Stone. The Parliament/ Funkadelic machine ruled the R&B charts and dance floors in the ’70s. During the ’80s Clinton tracks like “Atomic Dog” continued to show the kids how it was done. The early ’90s saw the rise of funk-inspired rap (Digital Underground, Dr. Dre, Warren G.) and funk rock (Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers) increasing awareness of Clinton's seminal role. Rappers from MC Hammer, to LL Cool J to Snoop Dogg tapped Clinton’s infectious grooves as the foundation of their music. 2014 saw George Clinton and P-Funk coming back into the spotlight in a big way with their first record release in over 30 years titled first ya gotta Shake the Gate. In addition, Clinton published his memoir Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain't That Funkin' Kinda Hard on You?, a tell all journey through four decades of the Godfather of Funk’s hit songs, drug abuse, the evolution of pop, rock, and soul music, his legal pitfalls, and much more.
“It’s been 33 years since a legitimate Funkadelic record, The Electric Spanking of the War Babies, has been out. A lot of it is from the band, but I also have everybody from my kids and grandkids to Sly Stone, Kim Burrell and El DeBarge on there. It’s a package!!!!” - George Clinton
